Obama’s Hustle?

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, I didn’t watch the presidential debates. But I have read that Mitt Romney “won” the initial debate and the Obama supporters are in a dither. The talking heads are having a field day though Ted Koppel seems to be having apoplexy wondering why Obama didn’t play all the cards in his hand — why didn’t he mention that he had bailed out two of America’s largest car companies thereby saving thousands of jobs? Why didn’t he allude to Mitt’s blunder in his presentation to the fat-cat Republicans who were giving him money by the boatloads by failing to reference the infamous 47%? And so it goes.

From what I read Barack Obama seemed somewhat disinterested after hugging his wife and mentioning to the world that they had been married for 20 years. What sort of game was he playing? Or didn’t he come to play at all? These are the types of questions that people are asking. I mentioned in yesterday’s blog that these debates are really entertainment staged for TV and presented to audiences with short attention spans. I still maintain that this is the case: all of the comments I have read focus on the impressions the two debaters made and none of this has anything whatever to do with which man would make the better president.

In any event, I take solace in the fact that Obama is a master politician and I suspect he knows what he is doing. His fundraisers have been filling cyberspace and the phone lines with appeals for more money to hold off the millions of dollars people like Karl Rove and the Koch brothers are spending in swing states to buy their man the election. I hesitate to suggest that Obama is involved in a clever ploy to raise more money to fuel his campaign in the final weeks. But I do think the man knows what he is doing and that he realizes that while he has lost this battle in the eyes of the voting public, he has not lost the war. The ploy may have begun when he downplayed his debating skills before the debates began, though we know better. This may well be Obama playing Minnesota Fats to Romney’s Fast Eddie: it may be a hustle designed to get the opponent to relax his guard until the final debates when he will come out fresh and primed for the contest and use the final moments on national TV to vault him back into the White House.

In any event, it has certainly made for interesting TV and will assuredly raise viewer interest in the final debates, which tends to fall off historically. One down and two to go! But whether or not this is the case, as I say, it has nothing whatever to do with the central question at issue: which of these two men will make the better president? Perhaps we should worry less about how these men performed on TV and worry more about which one would perform better on the world stage as this country enters an uncertain future.

  1. One thing Obama did well: allow Mitt Romney to hang himself with his own rope. Nearly everything he said contradicted his own record and the facts.

  2. I couldn’t have debated Mitt Romney. I fancy myself Quite the debater, but, I couldn’t have debated Mitt Romney. No matter who was on my side, how good they were at preparing people for debates, or, how much time and energy I put into being prepared…. There is NO WAY I could debate Mitt Romney!

How do you look into the eyes of a person who ACTUALLY BELIEVES that the Mohawk, Cherokee, Pueblo & all the other tribes of Native Americans are REALLY the decedents of one of the Lost Tribes of Israel and that they got here a few thousand years ago? How do you “REASON” with a person who can’t wait for the Mid-East to erupt in the flames of the war to end all wars so that Jesus will come back… (wait for it)… TO AMERICA? How do you pretend to take seriously a person who is ACTUALLY WEARING “Magical Underpants” (to ward off evil spirits and demons)? Do you ask to see them? Do you inquire if they offer protection against witchcraft, and, what his administration intends to do about the Witches the Bible clearly instructs us to ferret out and destroy?

You don’t do any of that because you are a decent person and decent people just don’t make fun of people suffering from a mental illness. It’s a big-time Taboo to do that, isn’t it? You don’t mock the living shit out of screw-balls like Mitt Romney for three basic reasons: (1) You simply don’t have the balls. (2) You don’t have the skills of George Carlin. (3) The job is worth more to your EGO than having the intellectual integrity to call a spade a spade is.

So, we are screwed. The bad brains push the good brains out because if Mitt Romney isn’t permitted to lie like a rug and live in a religious “fantasy land”… then neither are the rest of us…. And THAT is just too damn terrifying.

    • Perhaps this is why Obama came off so poorly? It’s as good an explanation as any I have read! Let’s hope sanity wins out in the end. Thanks for the comment and the visit!

  3. Wow. You give Obama a lot of credt. I thinlk he was just blown away by all the lies and flip flops comming out of Romney and he didn’t know what to do with that. I agree people should pay more attention to the issues rather than the performance, but sadly, that is not the way it seems to work in our made for tv society.

    • Obama is on record as disliking debates and I think he has a very low opinion of Romney. The combination resulted in disinterest in the entire event, I suspect. But he will rise to the occasion. The topic for the last debate is foreign policy and he will make Mitt look like a fool. Mark my words.

      • I’m not so sure Barney. I’m not at all sure he is preparing “properly” to deal with a character like Romney. I don’t think he has it “in him”. He is practicing his “debate style” with the likes of John Kerry and other Big Time Losers in the world of verbally kicking ass. This ISN’T a debate! This IS a performance! The crowd wants red meat and Obama, unlike Mr. Magic Underpants, shows up without a butchers knife.

Watching THIS kind of stuff is how you prepare to deal with a Romney.
